At an international strategy meeting in Uruguay a few years back, I learned that PAN AP’s brilliant Dr. So many towering figures across the globe - it’s impossible to name them all. PAN Germany’s Susan Haffmans leads the “ Double Standards” campaign with skillful persistence, and PAN Africa’s founding director Abou Thiam gracefully passed the torch of organizing to Maimouna Diene, the next generation of PAN leadership in francophone Africa. Javier Souza of RAPAL (PAN Latin America - check out one of Javier’s online agroecology workshop videos here). Then there’s PAN Asia Pacific’s director Sarojeni Rengam, who fights tirelessly for justice PAN UK’s eloquent and strategic leader Keith Tyrell and the always amiable and wise Dr. Romy’s daughter Ilang Ilang is now a powerful organizer in her own right, co-coordinating the global Stop the #ToxicAlliance campaign with our Organizing Co-Director Simone Adler. He also happens to be an expert at crafting poems that capture the essence of your personality, with the start of each line using the letters that spell your first name. He endured years of persecution - including lawsuits and threats of jail time - for daring to publicly challenge pesticide corporations with on-the-ground evidence of the damage their products were wreaking on farmers and farmworkers. Romy Quijano, the physician/activist who founded PAN Philippines and documented the devastating human health harms of the pesticides sprayed in plantation agriculture across the islands. There are so many PAN people I’ve been inspired by over the years.īeing part of a global network means meeting people like Dr. It takes courage to stand up to corporate lobbyists with deep pockets and even deeper connections to those in power.Īnd most importantly, it takes authentic, human connections with others who are working for change to stay grounded, and in this work for the long haul. It takes persistence to make progress toward the deep, systemic changes we seek. Part 1 is available here and Part 2 is available here. This is the final blog in a three-part series highlighting some of what I’ve seen and learned during 25 years of advocacy at PAN. The changes we’re working toward don’t happen overnight, and some may not occur within our lifetimes. Because, honestly, the work we do is hard. As I wind up my 25-year tenure at PAN, I’ve been reflecting on what’s kept me in this work for so many years. It is best to make the stencil holes a little larger to make it easier to lift the stencil off cleanly - mine are specified as 2.6mm I use 2.5mm stainless steel dowels - these are cheap and have chamfered ends. Drill the holes with a drill press - they have to be perpendicular! I’ve found that two holes are fine for a small board. If this is a one off, you could easily use a spare board to align and drill a couple of holes on a wooden board or similar. I then arrange the mounting/alignment holes on a10mm grid on my pcb. If that’s worth doing, whats the best way to do it? Draw a circle in the edge cuts layer on the PCB and then draw another circle in the mask layer?Īs I use this technique a fair bit, i made an alignment jig consisting of a thick slab of Delrin with 2.5mm holes drilled at 10mm centres on a CNC. If I get a solder paste stencil supplied with my boards, is it a good idea to have a couple of locating holes in the pcb and the stencil so they can both be aligned easily on a couple of dowel pins? Location holes for solder stencil Manufacturing I’d be curious to know if it works for you though. In this case you will pull the mylar from the pins.īut it’s your project, so do as you wish. You can pull quite hard on a piece of tape (sideways), but you can not do that when the mylar is just held with some pins. Standard method is then to fix the stencil itself with a piece of tape along one long edge too, and then hold it under tension while pasting so it does not flop around. If you do not have a SMT Stencil printer then laying the PCB flat on a table, putting some PCB pieces around it (both for making a bigger flat surface and for preventing the PCB from moving is a reasonable method. If you have a decent SMT stencil printer, it has adjustment knobs and you do not need this method in the first place. What sort of pins do you plan to put though this in the first place?.Mylar is floppy, It will not stay put very well when you move your squeegee. It gets easily contaminated with paste. It will hinder movement of your squeegee. In a more general sense, I also have doubt whether it’s a good idea to do this for several reasons. If this does not work (which seems unlikely) you can also add an “SMT Aperture” pad type to your footprint, and then only use the Paste layers for that pad. To make holes in the solder stencil, you also have to enable the F.Paste and B.Paste layers.īut do check your Gerbers. It looks like a NPTH pad has the F.Mask and B.Mask layers enabled. Little by little, you get deeper into the hole. Since you don’t know what to do and you feel desperate, you start to shovel away. “Imagine you fall into a fairly deep hole and the only thing you have to help you get out is a shovel. If you stop fighting, you keep your freedom to make your own choices.” The Metaphor of the Hole and the Shovel The more you fight against it, the more limits you have. Now, think about how life is like a Chinese finger trap. The harder you pull, the narrower the tube gets and it becomes impossible to get your fingers out. If you simply push your two fingers together, however, your fingers will be free. When you put one finger in each end and pull, the staw stretches out and gets narrower. “If you’ve ever played with a Chinese finger trap, you know that the game is a woven straw tube about the width of your finger. If you feed your thoughts, they’ll end up controlling a big part of your life. In other words, the more value you place on your thoughts, the bigger they become. The more you feed them, the more they grow, just like the tiger. The same thing happens with your thoughts. Now you have to give it racks of ribs and large pieces of meat. Every time it meows, you give it more.Īs the days pass, your pet starts to grow, and hamburger meat isn’t enough anymore. Your precious tiger starts to meow and you realize that it’s hungry. You adopt the tiger and keep it in your house. “One morning you wake up and open your front door to an adorable tiger cub. When you realize what’s happening, you’re already inside the shark tank. However, you can’t stand it, and you think “This is horrible, I can’t feel anxious!” and that makes you even more anxious. You start to feel a little bit anxious, but you want to avoid anxiety. This metaphor is perfect for people who suffer panic attacks. What do you think will happen?Īs you can imagine, you’ll very likely experience anxiety.” If you feel anxious, your seat will tilt and you’ll go directly into the shark tank. Your task is to avoid feeling any anxiety whatsoever. “Imagine that you’re sitting at the edge of a tank surrounded by sharks and that you’re connected to an extremely sensitive polygraph machine. Some Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Metaphors The Shark Tank and the Polygraph Test That way, the patient will be able to see behavior they didn’t see before and reinterpret or solve their problem. It’s important for the metaphor to offer a solution. It has to outline in some way the steps that the patient should take in real life to change their behavior. The metaphor should be action-oriented.There should be a clear correspondence between the person’s problem and the story. It should relate to the patient’s direct experience, or to things that are common knowledge for their social group and age (McCurry and Hayes, 1992). The metaphor should be consistent with the patient’s level of development. The patient has to understand the metaphor.Consequently, the metaphor should meet the following criteria: The metaphor has to be effective, and not just a story that has nothing to do with the patient. The important thing is for the patient to find them useful and for them to facilitate the necessary therapeutic changes. Of course, it’s crucial to know what metaphor to use, so that the therapist can offer a solution that aligns with the patient’s values.Īcceptance and commitment therapy metaphors can adapt to different kinds of problems. In this sense, metaphors are very helpful because they tell a story that the patient can identify with. That’s why activation or action are especially valuable. On the contrary, it means to commit yourself personally to your goals and go after them in spite of the difficulties you might face along the way. Now, that doesn’t mean that the person has to resign themselves to pain and suffering. Thus, its goal isn’t to avoid suffering or pain but to accept it. Concretely, acceptance and commitment therapy metaphors are a valuable tool for therapists.Īcceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is based on two fundamental principles: acceptance and activation. Telling simple stories somehow helps with comprehension and empathy. In psychotherapy, it’s very common to use metaphors to help patients connect with their problem and better understand what the therapist is trying to communicate. Click any screenshot for a larger image. TiltShift Generator works admirably for a free application. High resolution print images slow the app down quite a bit, though I found it to still work at acceptable speeds. The results are fairly decent for most needs, especially images destined for the Web (as seen in the image above). The rest is just playing around to get the effect you want. Simply drag your image into the preview area and click where you want the focus area to be in the image. You have control over radial or linear plane blurring, strength of blur, color saturation and contrast, and vignetting. While the control you get with this Air app pales in comparison to Alien Skin Bokeh, the tools you get are more than adequate for simple tilt-shift simulation. Both versions are identical, but the downloadable version is obviously going to be better because there’s no image uploading and downloading involved. TiltShift Generator from Art&Mobile is available online, or as a downloadable Adobe AIR application. A friend of mine recently informed me about a new tool to simulate tilt-shift on your images, and it’s absolutely free. But if your need for simulated tilt-shift photography is limited, the $199 price tag might be too much. The filter offers the maximum amount of flexibility and features available to simulate tilt-shift photography with your existing images, as well as much more in the way of adding the bokeh effect to your photos. A short while back, I reviewed Bokeh from Alien Skin Software, an excellent Photoshop filter perfect for simulating tilt-shift photography. Other times, however, when the moon is farther away and smaller in the sky, it does not cover the sun completely, but leaves a ring of light encircling the dark moon, known as an annular solar eclipse. Sometimes during a solar eclipse, when the moon moves in front of the sun, the moon is close enough to Earth and big enough in the sky that it covers the disk of the sun entirely, creating a total solar eclipse. Because the moon is farther away, it appears smaller and does not block the entire view of the sun.ĭue to a remarkable cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun are the correct sizes and distances away to appear roughly the same size in the sky. Furthermore, the EMA can also be prone to false signals, such as false positives and false negatives, meaning that it could mislead traders. However, a key drawback of the exponential moving average is that it is based on historical data, so it cannot predict future price movements. When the EMA is rising, it is supporting the price action, while the falling EMA is providing resistance to positive price action. This is because support and resistance levels are dynamic and constantly evolving, due to the fact that they’re based on more recent price action. The EMA can be an indicator for support and resistance levels. On the other hand, when the EMA is falling, traders may choose to sell when the price is rallying towards, or just above the EMA. When a trader is using an exponential moving average indicator within their strategy, they may choose to buy when the price dips near, or just below, the EMA line. Therefore, developing an exponential moving average strategy is great for traders who favour short-term strategies, such as day trading in fast-moving markets. It also means that there is less of a lag, as the EMA instead reacts quickly to price changes. It is particularly useful for identifying trends and recent swings on price charts to highlight trading patterns. This higher weight of recent price data is useful when analysing volatile markets, where there may be abrupt price changes. The exponential moving average therefore helps to influence traders’ decisions in the exact moment that they place a trade based on the exact price movements, as opposed to what was happening on trading charts in the past. As more weight is given to the recent price data and less to that which occurred earlier in the trading day, this makes it more sensitive to any change in price data and, theoretically, better for understanding in which direction the price may head next. Using the EMA in trading means that it adapts more quickly to changes in price action, which is an advantage over the simple moving average. This is very important if we are ever going to understand how photosynthesis works and if we want to use this knowledge to build truly efficient photovoltaic devices. To know how much this microenvironment affects the visible color, we first need to know what the true color of chlorophyll is. It is this interaction with the surrounding microenvironment what fine-tunes chlorophylls to cover as much of the visible spectrum as possible. Photosynthetic chlorophyll pigments are not alone in the leaf cells they are usually in a protein pocket. They only differ in a substituent of the porphyrin ring. Molecular structures of chlorophyll a ( left) and b ( right).
